A brief history of shampoo

Before modern day shampoo and conditioners, human beings around the world used natural ingredients to cleanse and moisturize their hair. Some such ingredients included coconut oil, gooseberry extract, almond oil, citrus juice, olive oil, and vinegar, among others. These pure natural oils and extracts were healthy, effective, and provided many benefits to the hair, including shine and sheen. Women had soft, shiny, and manageable hair naturally.

When then did we culturally transition to chemical-based products?

In the early 20th century, the English used soap with herbs to create a water-based concoction that precedes what we consider shampoo, and in the 1920s a German inventor created liquid shampoo. Modern shampoo, using surfactants, was first introduced in the 1930s with Drene, formulated with these detergent-like synthetics instead of soap.

With the advent of surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, the shampoo industry and modern shampoo were born. But with this development came drawbacks. Skin problems like irritated scalp (in conditions like Seborrheic dermatitis) increased. In fact, hair actually became dry and damaged due to harsh detergents and synthetic additives in these shampoos stripping hair of natural oils completely.
